What is an AI anyway?

TED

Even those closest to the development of AI are struggling to describe exactly where things are headed. In my TED talk I set out a new vision for the future of artificial intelligence. I outline what is coming, warn of humanity’s greatest challenge and explain how this can be a moment of hope and inspiration for us all.

The Coming Wave

We are approaching a critical threshold in the history of our species. Everything is about to change.

This is a story of 21st century technology, why it matters so much and what we can do to make it work for everyone. Soon we will live surrounded by AIs. They will carry out complex tasks—operating businesses, producing unlimited digital content and running core government services.

The coming wave will make this next decade the most productive in history. It represents nothing less than a step change in human capability and human society, introducing both risks and innovations on an awesome scale.

Biography

Before Microsoft AI, I cofounded and was CEO of Inflection AI, where we trained world leading models like Inflection-2.5 and built Pi, a personal AI.

And before that, I cofounded DeepMind, which Google acquired way back in 2014. At DeepMind I led our applied research and commercialisation efforts. We worked across AI R&D, healthcare, ethics, research, policy and product development with Google.

I also wrote the book The Coming Wave: Technology, Power, and the Twenty-first Century's Greatest Dilemma which came out in September 2023. Bill Gates was kind enough to call it his "favourite book about AI".

Alongside my work at Microsoft, I'm on the board of The Economist and am a Senior Fellow at the The Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs at the Harvard Kennedy School.
